Cures For Boredom
Chapter Two

Today's going to be good.  I can leave for a while.  I can go to a club.  I can get a job.  So much to do today good thing there's twenty-four hours.  I wonder if the mail's here.  Maybe there's somebody hiring.  That would be good.  I better get the newspaper.

Lorna went out to get the newspaper and stopped when she saw a postman walking up to the rusty old mailbox.

Oh God!  He knows what I did!  He'll know!  He must know!  He'll send me to jail!  I don't want to go to jail!  I'm not going!  They can't make me!  He deserved it!  I'm not going.  Why is he smiling?  He does know!

"Hi there," said the postman giving Lorna the mail.  "Your name's Lorna, right?  I know your father a little."

            "Yes, you know my father?"

He knows!  He knows!  He probably told him about everything!  He wants to hurt me too!  Oh God, just make him go away!

"Yeah, I'm Kurt Bradly.  I'm surprised we haven't met already."

"Yeah, well, um, Dad doesn't really let me go out much."

I can't believe I called that thing Dad.

"How old are you now, Lorna?"

Why does he want to know how old I am?  Is he hoping I'm legal?  Thats it!  I might as well be honest; he'll turn me in after a few seconds anyway.

            "Sixteen."

"No kidding?  I've got a son that's sixteen.  Maybe you two should meet."

No, he doesn't want to hurt me; he's going to have his son hurt me!  That's what it is!  I might as well play along for now.

"Yeah, maybe," said Lorna turning to go inside, only to be stopped by Kurt putting a gentle hand on her shoulder.

Oh no!  What's he going to do?

"Where"s your father?  I'd like to say hello, I haven't seen him in a while."

That sicko!  He's playing with my head!  He's not going to win!

He's been sick lately.  He finally got to sleep a couple of hours ago, and I'd hate to wake him.

            Good cover, he'll buy that.

"Alright, when he wakes up tell him to feel better."

            "Sure thing."

"Bye," said Kurt as he walked away.

Ha!  I showed him!  He has nothing on me!  I can just go back inside, look at my newspaper and find a job.  Then I can make some money, move away from here and someone can find him and I won't have to deal with it!

Lorna smiled to herself as she watched Kurt walk away and went inside.  She went into the kitchen, sat down at the cheap wooden table and opened the paper to the job ads.

Secretary?  No.  I hate getting cooped up.  Waitress?  No.  I hate it when people have to talk to me.  Cashier?  Maybe.  Mom used to take me to work with her at the Rite Aid.  Yeah, cashier.  I can do that.  I'm going to be a cashier!
