Cures For Boredom
Chapter Eight

"Okay boys, what did you want to get together and talk about?" asked Hammer looking around at all the men in the room.

"You've done a lot of jobs for us," said Desouza.  "I know you said you want out of the business, but you have to make another hit."

"I'm not doing it," said Hammer firmly.

"Come on, homes," said Ospina, "you have to help us out.  There's this guy that could ruin our whole operation."

"No, Julio," said Hammer, remaining firm.

"Rusty, we've been friends forever," started Blowers, looking for some understanding in Rusty's eyes.  "Please do this for me, if I get caught my kids could never get through something like that.''

"What about my boy, huh Max?" asked Hammer, anger rising in him.

With perfect timing, as though it had happened with a cheesy sitcom, Rusty brought in a tray of whiskey and shot glasses already full.  After setting it down, he shot a glare at Desouza and walked out.

While picking up a shot, Ospina said, "Ese, that boy has daggers out for you."

"And I'll have men out for him," said Desouza in the direction of Hammer while picking up his own shot.

"You wouldn't dare!" shouted Hammer, the anger in him becoming too much as he shot out of his chair and next to Desouza.

"Oh wouldn't I?" smirked Desouza as he stood up and had his eyes become level with Hammer's.

"Lonnie, come on, Rusty's a good kid," said Blowers walking near the men, while their menacing gazes never left each other.

"Do you want to go to jail?" asked Desouza, intended to Blowers, his eyes quickly diverting away from Hammer and back.

"No," said Blowers softly, ashamed of how he had just betrayed his friend.

"Julio, Max," began Desouza, "get the kid."

Blowers and Ospina reluctantly left the room to get Rusty, and Hammer struggled against Desouza, trying to go and save his son.  It was pointless, seeing as Desouza was much taller and more physically fit, but not as pathetic as Abby smacking and flailing her arms trying to get the men away.

"It's done, he's in the car," said Blowers sadly.

"Good," Desouza said and then turning to Hammer, "you know where to find us."

"I'm sorry Rusty," said Blowers as he left the room with Desouza.

Abby entered the room and knelt down in front of Hammer, his nose bleeding profusely and trying to keep himself from crying.  Abby took on a new attitude she was strong and determined.

She looked back to the door to the room and said, "I'm getting him back."
